Falls Prevention

Did you know that falls were the leading cause of injury hospitalisations in 2023–24, and the leading cause of injury-related deaths in 2022–23?

The vast majority of these falls occurred in people’s own homes from slipping, tripping and stumbling, as per the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.

Furthermore, Australians aged 65 years and over, are almost 12 times more likely to be hospitalised due to a fall than those aged 25-44 years. This risk is further amplified for those with pre-existing medical conditions.

Falls can have detrimental long-term consequences on people’s health, quality of life, and confidence, and often result in a significant and sudden deterioration on one’s mobility and independence.

Falls are multifactorial in nature, meaning that many variables can combine and contribute to a person’s risk of falling. As physiotherapists, we are trained to identify the specific intrinsic and environmental factors that increase an individual’s risk of falling, and design tailored rehabilitation programs accordingly to address these.

If you or a loved one have suffered a fall, or would like to assess and address your risk of falling, please contact us at Next Steps Therapy.
